Vortrag von Andreas Zeising: "Ich empfinde da nichts dran". Radioöffentlichkeit und moderne Kunst: Die Bochumer "Hallo Ü-Wagen"-Sendung von 1980

On July 24, 1980, WDR presenter Carmen Thomas visited Bochum with her radio show "Hallo Ü-Wagen" to discuss the newly purchased "Terminal" by Richard Serra with the audience and guests on site. The program achieved cult status, as countless citizens expressed their disapproval of the sculpture in a blunt manner. To this day, the outburst of popular anger, taking up a common topicality of the avant-garde, is seen as proof that Serra's artwork was ahead of its time. In retrospect, this not only raises critical questions about the meaning of art in public space, but also about the ability of experts and mediators to speak: how do we deal with the question "What's happening to me?", and how much legitimacy do we grant to lay judgment? The case also shows, by way of example, that an (art) audience is constituted where a shared interest is created.
