In his feature film, Tanzanian director Amil Shivji tells the story of Denge and Yasmin in Zanzibar in the 1950s, the last years of the British colonial era. Resistance to the European rulers is growing and the regime reacts with violence and arrests. The activist Denge distributes Soviet propaganda and is thus targeted by the police. Yasmin, on the other hand, who comes from an Indian-Zanzibari family, was forced into marriage with an older man. She escapes the unhappy marriage and stays with her friend, the independent Taarab singer Mwajuma. There she meets the young, rebellious Denge, and the two develop a deep love for each other.
Yasmin breaks a taboo in more ways than one. Not only does she free herself from her marital constraints, but she also enters into an interethnic relationship with an African who is also a freedom fighter. The story reveals the absurdity of colonial racial segregation in the melting pot of Zanzibar, where people from different regions of the world have clashed for centuries.
Shivji's film transports the viewer back in time and masterfully manages to convey an atmosphere of struggle for freedom, melancholy, upheaval and repression. The director deliberately avoids idyllic drone shots of the archipelago, as he is not interested in a stereotypical portrayal of Zanzibar as a vacation paradise. Instead, he opts for close-ups that focus on the interpersonal relationships and deep love between the young protagonists.
This multi-award-winning political drama about love, resistance and freedom is based on the award-winning Swahili novel by Adam Shafi. If you are interested in Africa's struggle for independence, this is the movie for you! (Shivji, TZ ZA DE QA 2023 - FSK 12 - OmdU)
