"Never again!" was sworn in Germany after the end of the National Socialist dictatorship. Never again should it be possible for totalitarianism to seize power in Germany, violate human rights, commit mass murder and plunge the continent into war. But if we want to prevent the country from sliding into another dictatorship, we must also be able to recognize the warning signs. Is German society really capable of doing this?

Although there is no lack of urgent warnings about extremism and heated public discussions, these are mostly concerned with side issues. If, on the other hand, a government with fascist characteristics is actually established, as has been the case in Russia in recent years, this is overlooked or denied by large sections of the German public.

Thomas Petersen deals with the question of how to recognize totalitarian thinking that paves the way for tyranny - regardless of the form it takes and the ostensibly good political intentions with which it is associated.
