On Saturday, August 2 at 11 a.m., Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarzenegger will give a lecture at Wissen um 11 entitled "Why is your truth better than mine?"

From knowing the world in your pocket to perceived truths and conflicting realities. Schwarzenegger is a professor of communication and media studies with a focus on media change. He heads the "Media Change and Long-Term Transformation Processes" lab at the ZeMKI at the University of Bremen. His research focuses on long-term and short-term, historical and contemporary changes in the social meanings and functions of media in social and private communication. A current focus of his work is on so-called "alternative media" and the interpretations of reality that they provide in comparison to other media offerings.

The lecture
The lecture deals with a paradoxical development in our profoundly mediatized society. On the one hand, it is now easier than ever for people to access the world's accumulated knowledge and diverse sources of information. On the other hand, there is so much potential knowledge and false information available that there is often no longer even agreement on what counts as knowledge and how we as a society can agree on the basics of what we consider to be true and real. The tendency towards perceived truths and the conflicting confrontation of different realities is not a consequence of a lack of knowledge, but rather a reaction to being overwhelmed by the wealth of information available. The speaker will explain why this is the case in his thirty-minute lecture.

This lecture will take place as a face-to-face event. The lecture will also be recorded and made available on our YouTube channel and on our website.

On Saturday, August 9, Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler will give the lecture "Trust is good, understanding is better: How technical devices explain their decisions".
