There is a zoo near Weimar from which the animals can look out over a strange area. A large chimney smokes there and there are two kinds of people - striped and booted. Submissive order reigns in the zoo and none of the animals want to concern themselves with what is happening on the other side of the fence. This changes when a new resident is brought in. A young bear, who has been captured and separated from his family, dares to question the chimney, the smoke and the omnipresent cruelty.

Jens Raschke's award-winning and highly topical play tells of the events in the Buchenwald concentration camp from the surprising perspective of its zoo animals. Matthias Thieme's production works with the juxtaposition of abstraction in the set and sound design and the concreteness of a fantastically designed puppet world.

The production was supported by the Sparkassenstiftung Erfurt as part of a project grant.
