Gender equality is firmly anchored as a fundamental value in the EU. EU-wide regulations combat gender-based discrimination, strengthen the rights of working mothers and combat violence against women and girls. But where does the EU currently stand in terms of gender equality policy? What challenges are there, especially in times when anti-democratic movements are mobilizing specifically against equality policy projects?
As part of the #EUwomen exhibition and to mark International Women's Day, EUROPE DIRECT Düsseldorf is organizing the panel discussion "What women want - for Europe". Experts from EU institutions and civil society will talk about how women's rights can be protected and strengthened and how women's voices can be better integrated into the political decision-making process. In discussion:
Mayor Klaudia Zepuntke opens the event with a welcoming address. Vivien Leue, freelance correspondent for Deutschlandradio, will host the evening.

Parallel to the event, the exhibition #EUwomen - Women in European Politics: Successes, Opportunities and Obstacles will be presented in the open space of the Central Library. Interactive exhibits and informative panels provide insights into the history of gender equality and its pioneers. In addition, portraits of current female leaders in the EU are shown, which means that the exhibition also addresses issues of gender equality in the present. #EUwomen is a traveling exhibition of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in Germany and will be presented at KAP1 by EUROPE DIRECT Düsseldorf.
