Gender swapping and love confusion: After a shipwreck, young Viola lands in the unknown region of Illyria. Disguised as a young man, she enters the service of Duke Orsino, who quickly takes a liking to her. Orsino, however, is in love with Countess Olivia, to whom he sends the disguised Viola, alias Cesario, as a messenger of love. Olivia, in turn, is immediately smitten by Cesario. Meanwhile, Sir Andrew and Sir Toby spend their days drinking. They are repeatedly disturbed by Olivia's steward Malvolio, who also has his eye on his mistress. Together with their maid Maria, the two drunkards fake a letter addressed to Malvolio in which Olivia confesses her love to Malvolio. Following the written request, Malvolio makes a complete fool of himself. Then Viola's twin brother Sebastian, who was thought to be dead, turns up in Illyria and takes the chaos of confusion to the extreme.
WHAT YOU WANT, written around the year 1601, is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies. Full of relish and cheerful, but also melancholy and bitterly evil, the play plays with gender roles and ideas of identity in a surprisingly contemporary way and creates an intoxicating place of longing for love in faraway Illyria.
