Watch Me Rise - "A decade full of setbacks and mistakes" Bio/Album info
Within the German emo and post-hardcore scene, there are only a few artists who can tie themselves to a sound as exemplified by La Dispute, Touché Amore or Defeater. With their unique take on these bands, Watch Me Rise have been one of the most up-and-coming post-hardcore bands in Germany since 2018. On their two EPs, the band created a sound that is unparalleled in Germany with influences from punk rock, post-hardcore and emo as well as profound lyrics. After opening shows for bands such as Enter Shikari, Black Flag, Rogers, Birds In Row, Trash Boat and many more, Watch Me Rise are no longer an unknown quantity. With their debut album, the band from Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg are taking the biggest step in their career to date. Founded in Frankfurt am Main in 2018, Watch Me Rise released their debut EP "Of Anxious Minds And Sleepless Nights" in the same year. With the subsequent release of the singles "Addict" and "Cancer", the band continued to work on their sound in 2019. Despite the ensuing pandemic, the band continued to work on new music and celebrated their live comeback in 2022 with several festivals and a headline tour through Germany and Austria. In addition, the single "Black Dots" was released followed by "Wrong Way". After the release of the single "All My Friends Are Sad" and their indoor debut at Schlachthof Wiesbaden, the band toured again in May 2023 and supported As Everything Unfolds in Germany. In June 2023, the band released their second EP "Bedtime Stories", which was also promoted at festival performances in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Germany after two consecutive sold-out release shows in Frankfurt. After a longer live break, Watch Me Rise 2024 returned for selected shows and released their single "(for) Friede" in November 2024 as a first taste of the band's upcoming longplayer debut. On the song, singer Josh deals with the death of his own grandmother for the first time in three years and hints at the emotional depth in the band's lyrics. Watch Me Rise address personal experiences and adventures in their music, which is a common thread throughout the album, according to Sven. "We want to show people out there that you're not alone. Our music should resonate, trigger something and if we can inspire someone to open up and talk about their mental health, then our music has made a difference."
The songwriting for "ADFOSAM" began in September 2023 and, according to Flo, grew piece by piece influenced by emotional highs and lows within the process. Consequently, writing about personal topics in their songs is not difficult for singer Josh. "I find it rather difficult to write about impersonal or superficial topics. This band and our music have always been a form of "self-therapy", where a form of self-reflection takes place in the songwriting, while I process everything live in a different way." So this kind of art is the expression of feelings that is easier than simply talking about them and thus offers a lot of potential for identification and doesn't mince its words ("I think I suffered enough" - "Maladaptive"). "Calico" picks up on the band's melodic hardcore roots and consists of lyrics that guitarist Shmagi wrote after therapy sessions to deal with his own emotions: "Once it was mine and mine only, now it is yours too." "MARAD", the second single from the debut album, also takes this approach with a punky lead riff and subtle influences from indie rock and shoegaze. Similarly energetic is the entertaining track "Solace Grace", which in just 1:24 minutes is driving and danceable with a melodic focus reminiscent of Touché Amore and the early work of While She Sleeps. Both "Resign" and "Indigo" prove that the music of Watch Me Rise lives primarily through contrasts and variety, both of which convince with calmer pacing and focus on the vocals, while washed-out clean guitars playfully outline them and work towards emotional climaxes. "In Red" closes the album with atmospheric tremolo guitars that color the oppressive emo sound with hope as well as an emotional narrative and perfectly summarizes what is told on the ten songs over a playing time of 29 minutes. With a driving hardcore spirit, the band poses questions about their own identity, the meaning of life, future prospects and how to deal with life within a generation that feels abandoned. "In a way, the album is an ode to the Overthinker generation - a retrospective of how we got here, as well as an intrinsic look and story about the past you've left behind," says Shmagi.
"A decade full of setbacks and mistakes" is the result of seven years of the band's history and dealing with change during that time, according to Josh. "Everything we do has always been about dealing with emotions," says Lukas. "Both musically and lyrically. What has changed is the experiences we have on a daily basis. This also changes the type of emotions that flow into the music."
With their emotional sound, a portion of anger in their stomachs and newfound self-confidence, Watch Me Rise scream their message loudly into the world and touch their own emotional world like hardly any other band from Germany. In response to bands such as Casey, Deafeater or the early La Dispute, Watch Me Rise present a deeply moving and poignant longplayer with their debut album, produced by Konstantin Cajkin (Kind Kaputt), which portrays the band in their best production to date. Before the festival summer and appearances at Mighty Sounds and Farewell Youth Fest, Watch Me Rise will tour Germany in March 2025 as support for Sperling. "A decade full of setbacks and mistakes" will be released on April 25th via Uncle M/Oh Lumiere and Blood Blast Distribution and will be celebrated with an official release show at Schlachthof Wiesbaden (Kesselhaus).
