Expressionists newly collected

Since 2018, the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden has been home to the Dr. Kurt and Annelore Schulze Foundation. Three artists with a connection to Dresden are particularly prominent in the Hamburg couple's collection: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) and Erich Heckel (1883-1970) were members of the Dresden artists' association "Brücke", Otto Dix (1891-1969) was a founding member of the "Dresdner Sezession Gruppe 1919" and a professor at the Dresden Academy of Art until 1933.

The show in the Kupferstich-Kabinett presents highlights from these three artists in dialog with expressionist works from the museum's own collection. The spectrum of themes ranges from the utopian beginnings of the movement - symbolized by Heckel's White Horses - to the traumatic experiences of the First World War, as depicted in Dix's sketches of war casualties and trenches in unsparing drastic detail.
