On the eve of the First World War, a small Baltic seaside resort served Eduard von Keyserling as the backdrop for a radical critique of utopia that foreshadows the catastrophes of the 20th century. Far from the routines of everyday life, the yearnings and dreams of self-realization of a life-hungry dropout, a self-proclaimed artist and a privileged pupil of the rich and powerful grow immeasurably. The sheer overwhelming power of the sea soon exposes all the "great feelings" as self-indulgent illusions. Composer Elmar Lampson, a master of tonal and atonal sound magic, lends the subtly ironic tone of Keyserling's fine social analysis a dazzling polyphony.
