It is just over 13,000 years since the last volcano in the Eifel spewed lava and devastated large parts of what is now the Eifel. From a geological point of view, this is a very insignificant period, and volcanism in the Eifel is still considered to be active. Renowned volcanologists are of the opinion that volcanoes will most probably erupt again in the Eifel. But when ? In a few years? Or only in many millennia? The Eifel is full of volcanoes and evidence of recent volcanism. This excursion leads to interesting places, gives a picture of volcanism in the Eifel and its history and introduces the basics of volcanology and Eifel geology. We see where volcanic gases bubble in the middle of the forest, hike through the spectacular Wolfsschlucht gorge and visit the famous Trass caves.
