Europe is under pressure: migration, war and populism are challenging the foundations of our democracy. At the upcoming "mittwochgespräch", Gerald Knaus will show ways in which Europe can gain control over migration - effectively, humanely and in accordance with the rule of law. He warns of the dangers of right-wing populist strategies that exploit fears and undermine democracy. Knaus makes it clear that courageous, pragmatic answers are needed to preserve Europe's peace, freedom and prosperity.
Gerald Knaus, born in 1970, studied philosophy, political science and economics in Oxford, Brussels and Bologna. In 1999, he was one of the co-founders of the "European Stability Initiative", a liberal think tank based in Sarajevo and known for its migration concepts. He also taught economics at the University of Chernivtsi in Ukraine and worked for several years for NGOs and international organizations in Bosnia. From 2001 to 2004, he was also Director of the Lessons Learned and Analysis Unit (LLA) of the EU Department of UNMIK in Kosovo. He is a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and was an Associate Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Governance in the USA for several years. Politically, Gerald Knaus, who lives in Berlin, was a co-initiator and negotiator of the 2016 refugee pact between Turkey and the EU.
