What is War

What traces does war leave behind - in the body and in the collective memory of subsequent generations? In "What is War", two artists whose stories are connected to the same war in different ways meet in a deeply personal duet: the Chinese choreographer Wen Hui, who grew up during the Cultural Revolution, and the Japanese performer Eiko Otake, a child of the post-war period in Japan. Together they question the traces of violence inscribed in bodies - their own and those of many others. Based on intensive research into so-called "comfort women" - the women abducted and systematically abused by the Japanese army during the Second World War - they interweave dance, video and text to create a moving reflection on memory, trauma and the continuing effects of historical guilt. "What is War" is not a historical reconstruction, but a radically contemporary, poetic and political gesture. In the midst of new wars and global crises, Wen Hui and Eiko Otake remind us how vulnerable - and how valuable - every single life is.
