Who are the people who work day and night in Germany's health and care system to ensure that we are well cared for, can recover or die with dignity? The vast majority of these "carers" go far beyond the limits of their workload and are committed to a system in which essential care and treatment factors such as time and dignity have long been subject to categories such as cost coverage, flat rates per case and capacity utilization.
The film "Who Cares?" portrays doctors, midwives and nurses in their daily efforts to care for people from birth to death in such a way that humanity, closeness and warmth are not completely lost despite the strict financial requirements and timings demanded by the system. The observer is expected to do a lot - when a person comes into the world and when a person has to go. The cycle of life is closely interwoven with the experiences that all people have with the health and care system in the course of their lives. The ambivalence of the perspectives - the "caregivers" may themselves be dependent on someone looking after them tomorrow - shows that illness and death, care and frailty, the loss of independence and dependence on helping structures are an inseparable part of our lives.
Following the film, we will discuss with our guests, Anke Bertram, first chairwoman of the Schleswig-Holstein Midwives' Association and Birte Pauls, social policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group in Schleswig-Holstein and a trained nurse. Questions will include: How do we want to be cared for? How can working conditions in the care sector be improved? Who takes care of the caregivers? How fair is our society in its treatment of carers, but also of the elderly, the sick and pregnant women?
