WHO IS HERE WHEN NO ONE IS?
Qi Jin, Harumi Miyato and Marei Dierßen
Students of the University of the Arts Bremen

The title of this exhibition, "Who is here when no one is?", raises a question that touches on the nature of human existence through layers of physical space, memory and imagery. The three participating artists use different visual strategies to approach situations in which people or bodies are physically absent. What they have in common is an interest in how memories, traces and the presence of the human in spaces and materials can be preserved and made visible.
In this exhibition, there are hardly any direct representations of people. Nevertheless, the structure of the pictorial space, the choice of materials, the arrangement and the direction of the gaze create a space in which the state of absence becomes present once again.

Artists:

Marei Dießen
The painter integrates quotations from Western paintings into modern interior scenes. This creates pictorial worlds that question the boundaries between reality and surreality, between personal memory and collective history.

Qi Jin
The artist works with everyday materials such as aluminum foil, plastic film and spray paint - substances that are usually considered disposable. He uses these to create abstract fragments of body parts such as hearts or arms in the form of objects and installations. At the same time, he is interested in the logic of the arrangement of these fragments in a limited space and will also investigate this through painting.

Harumi Miyato
The painter uses everyday images from advertising photographs and tourism brochures to rearrange visual structures of landscape and consumption. In this way, she expresses the relationship between visual culture and the identity of places.
