At the grave of resistance fighter Madga Thürey on July 17, 1945, the communist Fiete Dettmann and the social democrat Karl Meitmann joined hands and proclaimed "Never again fascism! Unity, unity and never again fratricidal struggle!". Gertrud Meyer, Hilde Benthien, Erna Mayer, Renate Strübing and many other women in Hamburg who had resisted the Nazi regime also associated this with the hope and the declared will to build a new world of peace and freedom.
