In the concert series "How free is art?", Ensemble Modern explores the topic of artistic freedom and its limits with music and discussions.

In the last part of the series, "How free are composers?", composer Brigitta Muntendorf and composer Unai Urkola Etxabe discuss with Leonie Reineke the extent to which artists can incorporate personal convictions, political attitudes or influences from other cultures into their work.

In "Forbidden games" (2019), Mexican artist Hilda Paredes deals with children who are held without their parents in prisons on the border between Mexico and the USA. In "La mémoire de l'eau" (2014), Italian filmmaker Carmine-Emanuele Cella explores the fragility of water and our planet. In "The heart's ear" (1997), Australian Liza Lim takes a melody from Islamic Sufi music as her starting point.
