Emily Dickinson, probably the most important American poet of the 19th century, was portrayed for decades as an eccentric recluse, her letters were readdressed and her poems manipulated. The lesbian movement of the 1980s and 1990s discovered her for itself and Madeleine Olnek's film shows her passion and long-standing relationship with Susan Gilbert with plenty of situation comedy.
As an introduction, Prof. Dr. Karen Nolte will take a look at the 19th century and the significance of Emily Dickinson for the lesbian movement. Afterwards, we look forward to a discussion with the guests. Prof. Dr. Karen Nolte is Director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at Heidelberg University and an honorary board member of the Hannchen Multipurpose Foundation for Queer Movements.
