CINEMA IRAN opens with the German premiere of WINNERS by Scottish-Iranian filmmaker Hassan Nazer. The film tells the story of Yahya, who fled Afghanistan with his mother, and his girlfriend Leyla. One day, the children find a gilded statuette of a naked man in the street dust. Together with his friend Leyla, he tries to track down the statue's rightful owner and return it.

WINNERS was the official British entry for the Best International Film category at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023. The film alludes to the 2017 Oscars, when Asghar Farhadi won the Oscar for THE SALESMAN but stayed away from the ceremony in protest at Donald Trump's policies. References to milestones in Iranian film history are also no coincidence.
