WINTER ADÉ (1988) mit Regisseurin

For WINTER ADÉ (1988), director Helke Misselwitz embarks on a cinematic journey through the GDR: from Zwickau in Saxony to Sassnitz on the island of Rügen. On her journey, the filmmaker gets to know a number of different female personalities: successful advertising economist Hiltrud, single mother Christine, who works in a briquette factory, punk girls Kerstin and Anja, 85-year-old Margarete, who is celebrating her diamond wedding anniversary with her husband, and the deputy mayor of Niehagen, Erika Banhardt, who runs a children's home full-time. They all talk about their lives, about marriage and family, work, strokes of fate and prospects for the future.

In the last phase of GDR filmmaking, a series of revealing portraits of women were produced by the DEFA documentary film studio. Taken together, they paint a multi-layered picture of women's lives and the state of emancipation in the GDR. The director had to revise the exposé for WINTER ADÉ several times at the request of leading decision-makers. The film only gained its thematic explosiveness during the shooting process through the open answers of the various women.
