From photographer to winemaker - because wine is also art
Photographer Andreas Durst photographed wine for a long time - until he thought to himself: Why not make wine himself? No sooner said than done. In 2009, he took the plunge and now produces wines on a tiny 0.8 hectares in the Northern Palatinate that are as independent as he is. Artisanal, unconventional and with a great deal of passion.
The beginnings? More cult than comfort: his first wines were made in an old laundry room. Today, he runs a real garage winery and produces just 5,000 to 6,000 bottles a year - class instead of quantity.
Durst's hobbyhorse? Old vines and classic varieties: Sylvaner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Portugieser and Pinot Noir. He is particularly proud of his over 115-year-old true-rooted Portugieser - probably the oldest in the world!
His philosophy? No frills: spontaneous fermentation, little sulphur, often unfiltered.
The result? Wines with character, elegance and depth. His wines don't shout, they whisper - and at a high level. You can taste that someone with passion, flair and a good dose of stubbornness is at work here. And when he is not in the vineyard, he remains true to his first love: photography. Because somehow both are art - except that you can drink a lot of wine while doing it. 🍷
