Wo Altona einst flanierte. Die Geschichte der Königstraße

In the organizer's words:

Where people once ruled and prayed, stood on stage and met in cafés - we show the historical transformation of what was once Altona's main street. Because no other street in Altona has changed its face as radically over the last 100 years as Königstraße.

Over the past few months, we have researched numerous photographs in our archive, collected everyday objects and marveled at this lost world with cooperation partners such as the Altona Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the parish of St. Trinitatis and various Jewish institutions. We also literally dug on site, took photographs and talked to former residents of the area around Königstrasse.

The result is a deep map of maps, photographs, memoirs, biographies, letters, oral testimonies, newspaper reports, advertisements, archaeological finds and museum objects. In this way, the past and the present, the political and the everyday are retold in space.

Our exhibition begins after the great fire of 1713 with the reconstruction of Altona as a baroque town on the Elbe, whose center was on Königstraße. It deals with the institutions and protagonists of the Enlightenment and one of the most tolerant places in Europe and traces the transformation into a bourgeois shopping street around 1900, which was located in the immediate vicinity of the poor quarter. It also addresses the exclusion and persecution of Jews during the Nazi era and the destruction of the city in July 1943, ending with the controversial redevelopment as part of New Altona and the search for traces of history in today's "Street of the Future".

The exhibition can be visited until 17.10.2025.
