Workshop: At the Edge of Chaos – Erforschung des latenten Raums der KI-Klangsynthese

In this interactive workshop as part of the Artists and Scientists in Residency program, participants will try out the digital production of sounds using two different models.

First, the two models RAVE & IPF* will be introduced: What are the underlying mathematical and technical considerations? How can the two models be combined with each other? What soundscapes do they create?
The two models are then applied in practical exercises using the freeware software Pure Data. It will be demonstrated how RAVE and IPF can be configured for real-time sound synthesis. The complex mathematics required for this was compiled into simple modules by Moisés Horta Valenzuela during his residency at the ligeti center, which are also available as open source.

Through interactive demonstrations of reactive audio environments, we will explore practical applications in performance contexts in a 3D sound environment, followed by a brief discussion on how participants might apply these technologies in their own work.

*RAVE (Realtime Audio Variational autoEncoder) is a deep learning model for digital sound generation developed at IRCAM in Paris. It uses the approach of artificial neural networks inspired by the structure and functioning of the human brain.
The IPF (Impulse Pattern Formulation) is a mathematical equation used at the ligeti center that can, for example, simulate the physics of sound generation in musical instruments.
The combination of both models enables a balancing act between orderly, complex behavior and chaos.

Previous knowledge of these special technologies is not required, but basic knowledge of graphical programming languages and digital audio concepts is recommended. Participants will gain practical knowledge that they can immediately apply to their own creative projects.

Participants should bring their own laptop with the Pure Data program pre-installed (available at www.puredata.info) and headphones.
