In its original sense, the term dancehall refers to a place where people dance. It also describes a music genre and a dance style. Both are the basis of Jamaican dancehall culture, which was born in Kingston in the late 1980s as an offspring of reggae music and movement. Dancehall dance is a street dance style that stems from dancehall culture and is primarily danced to dancehall music. It includes a wide range of codified steps with specific names that are directly influenced by everyday Jamaican cultural and social characteristics and became popular through solo dancers and dance crews in Kingston. The fundamentals of dancehall dance include movements that can be described as grounded, curvy, flowing and polyrhythmic.
