Wunder auf sechs Beinen – Lüneburger Insektengeschichten

In the organizer's words:

The unknowns in the spotlight

There are more than 33,000 species of insects in Germany. Only very few of them are as well-known as the peacock butterfly or the cockchafer. The exhibition focuses on insects that are unknown to many people: For example, caterpillar flies, chalcid wasps, splendid chiggers and grasshoppers. We want to inspire enthusiasm for the beauty and diversity of this little-noticed living world and encourage people to take a closer look at them. All of the insects shown can be found in the district of Lüneburg - there is still plenty to discover in your own environment!

Species-rich Lüneburg - front runner in the "Bioblitz"

A special kind of competition: people interested in natural history went on a nationwide search for animals and plants in their district. They photographed the species they found and uploaded the photos to observation.org, the internet platform for nature observations.

Every year, the Westphalian Museum of Natural History in Münster organizes the "Bioblitz" reporting competition, in which all the species reported on obersavtion.org in a district are added together. The citizen science commitment of the people of Lüneburg stood out: With over 5000 species reported, the district of Lüneburg became the nationwide leader in the "Bioblitz" in 2023 and 2024!

Everyone can take part - even via cell phone

The ObsIdentify app for identifying and reporting insects and plants can be downloaded from all popular app stores. To upload photos, you need to create a user account at observation.org.
