Based on the short story of the same name by Isaac Singer. With songs by Michel Legrand
At the beginning of the 20th century: Yentl lives in a shtetl (Yiddish for small town) in Eastern Europe. She is Jewish, young, intelligent and thirsty for knowledge. She wants to study the Talmud, the "textbook of Judaism". She wants to discuss, exchange ideas with others, read, learn, argue - but there is one small problem: she is a woman! And women are not allowed to study the Talmud or the Torah. After the death of her father, she leaves her home. In order to finally be able to study at a yeshiva, a Jewish religious school, she disguises herself as a man and calls herself Anshel from now on.
The roles of the sexes in society emerge clearly, giving the shtetl story an unexpected topicality.
