All thinking about time is thinking about the fabric of our lives. Its arrow of time - like music - knows only one direction. In the picture, on the other hand, time seems to stand still. Only literature has a sophisticated play with time levels that cheats the mechanics of clocks and calendars. It follows it chronologically or breaks it up, memory becomes the present and the heartbeat becomes a poetic timepiece of its own kind. The question of when to tell the story and the choice of tense are fundamental decisions for any prose text. How do you narrate long periods of time, where does the moment take on an eternity and where do you speed things up? These are all ways of structuring the text as a whole and creating rhythm and flow in the narrative. We have a weekend to explore this in readings, try it out in exercises and test the time structure of our own projects.

KATRIN LANGE is head of the Writing Academy at the Literaturhaus München. LENA GORELIK is an award-winning author of essays, books for young people and novels ("Wer wir sind", "Mehr Schwarz als Lila" and others).
