Zoltán Kodály: Missa Brevis und Laudes Organi

In the organizer's words:

Closing concert as part of the International Düsseldorf Organ Festival (IDO)

In this choir and organ concert, the Bachverein Düsseldorf, under the direction of Alexander Niehues, presents two of the most important works by the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967).

Composed in 1945, the Missa Brevis was written at a time when Europe lay in ruins. This mass is therefore also a great call for peace. Musically, the work draws on all eras of choral music - from Gregorian chant, Palestrina and Bach to the Romantics.

The Laudes Organi are Zoltán Kodály's last completed work. Here, the 84-year-old composer clothed a melody from the 12th century in an elaborate "Fantasy for choir and organ".
