The role of the church in democracy
Lukas Bärfuss in conversation with: Bishop Kirsten Fehrs
Should the churches stand up for democracy? Or is religion obliged to maintain political abstinence? How much credibility do they have if their ranks have looked the other way for decades when it comes to sexual abuse? But in dark times, churches have always been places of freedom and resistance: in the GDR, in Latin America, under National Socialism. Edith Stein, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Óscar Romero also defined peace and justice politically. They paid for their struggle with their lives.
How does Bishop Kirsten Fehrs, the new Chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, see this? How does she interpret the words of the Gospel? Does she love her "enemies"? What role does she give herself and the church in times when democracy is at stake?
