On May 8, 1945, the National Socialists' reign of terror ended with Germany's surrender. Millions of people were persecuted, murdered and forced into war. Democracy had to emerge anew from the ruins. But the past does not pass without a trace. Memories, prejudices and images of the enemy linger on. Democracy cannot be taken for granted - it must be lived, defended and developed.
