On International Women's Day, we are showing a documentary film about the women's strike in Iceland on October 24, 1975:

A DAY WITHOUT WOMEN

On October 24, 1975, 90 percent of Icelandic women went on strike: they stopped working, left their homes, refused to cook or look after their children. They refused to accept that their work was undervalued in the workplace and in the family. With their strike, they brought the whole country to a standstill, and Iceland became the "best place in the world to be a woman." For the first time, the women themselves tell of this DAY WITHOUT WOMEN, subversively, humorously and with playful animations. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," recalls one of the activists, "we just wanted to change them a little!" Today, Iceland is considered one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to equality and regularly ranks number one on the gender parity index.
