The Berliner Ensemble is one of the most renowned and traditional theaters in Germany. Named after Bertolt Brecht's world-famous company, the Berliner Ensemble has written theater history. In its 125-year history, the house on Schiffbauerdamm has always dealt with current socially relevant issues and, with the 2017/18 season, the start of Oliver Reese's directorship, is once again increasingly focusing on contemporary texts and themes. In the tradition of Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Müller, the Berliner Ensemble concentrates on theater about our present. The pressing issues of our time are dealt with on stage. In addition to the works of Bertolt Brecht, the repertoire focuses on current material and contemporary plays by living authors. The importance of international contemporary drama is particularly evident in a comprehensive authors' program, which, under the direction of the writer and playwright Moritz Rinke, attracts new authors to the stage and an internationally oriented repertoire with plays from England, America, Norway, France and the Congo. The ensemble is at the heart of the theater. The Berlin ensemble includes well-known actors and actresses such as Constanze Becker, Andreas Döhler, Stephanie Eidt, Bettina Hoppe, Ingo Hülsmann, Corinna Kirchhoff, Felix Rech and Stefanie Reinsperger. In addition to the ensemble, the continuous work with trend-setting directors such as Frank Castorf, Mateja Koležnik, Ersan Mondtag and Antú Romero Nunes, as well as in-house director Michael Thalheimer, significantly defines the profile of the Berliner Ensemble. In its largest auditorium, the neo-baroque building on Schiffbauerdamm can accommodate around 700 spectators, while the "Kleines Haus" side venue seats 200.
