The Bürgerhaus Weserterrassen am Osterdeich is one of the most successful cultural centers in Bremen with a wide range of cultural and social events and over 75,000 visitors a year, mainly from Bremen-Mitte and the eastern suburbs.
After the building was built in 1933 as a dance and excursion venue and used as an American officers' mess and jazz club after the Second World War, it became the property of the City of Bremen in the mid-1970s. In 1975, the non-profit association Bürgerhaus Weserterrassen e.V. was founded.
Since then, a varied program of concerts, courses and cultural events for all age groups has been held here. Recurring events include the Ü-30 party "Jungbrunnen", the "Jazz & More" series with top-class jazz concerts and the "Bremer Frauenfrühstück" with readings and music. Children's theater plays for children from the age of 4 are also part of the regular program. The creative courses and projects for children and adults cover the areas of movement, dance, language, self-assertion, theater and artistic design. During the vacations, there are regular creative and sporting vacation activities for children, which have won several awards in recent years. The premises of the community center can be rented by initiatives, self-help groups, democratic parties and similar groups.
A senior citizens' meeting center is integrated into the Weserterrassen community center. Supported by the Senator for Social Affairs, the area for older people and senior citizens includes a wide range of exercise, fitness and dance courses. Creative activities such as sewing, photography and writing are also offered, as well as courses to promote memory and courses to learn how to use computers and smartphones. For some years now, there has also been an in-house senior citizens' theater group and an in-house choir, which regularly put on public performances. Every week, with the support of volunteers, the meeting center organizes a senior citizens' program day on Tuesdays, which alternates between concerts, readings, health lectures, dance cafés and seasonal and regional lunches. Excursions into the countryside, to trade fairs, retirement homes or the Bremen open-air market are also organized.
Private celebrations such as birthdays, weddings or anniversaries are organized by Café Weserterrassen. A summer terrace for 250 people with a direct view of the Weser invites you to linger in fine weather.
