The book has shaped our culture and civilization like no other medium: for centuries, our knowledge about the world and about people has been stored in books. The German Book and Writing Museum of the German National Library is responsible for collecting, exhibiting and scientifically processing evidence of book and media history. Founded in 1884 as the Deutsches Buchgewerbemuseum in Leipzig, it is considered to be the world's oldest and one of the most important museums in the field of book culture in terms of the size and quality of its holdings.

In addition to manuscripts, historical prints, colored papers and modern book art, the collection also includes archives and bequests on the history of type and typography. Together with the world's largest collection of watermarks as well as writing instruments and machines for book and paper production, the museum's holdings allow an interdisciplinary approach to cultural and media studies issues.

The museum offers a varied program of guided tours, workshops and events.
