The German Historical Museum is Germany's national history museum and one of the largest history museums in the world. Located in Berlin's historic center, it sees itself as a place for strengthening historical judgment, where overarching philosophical, ethical and historical questions are negotiated.

The German Historical Museum was founded in 1987 on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city of Berlin by the then Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin. As part of the German reunification treaty, the buildings and collections of the Museum of German History (MfDG), the central history museum of the GDR, were transferred to the ownership of the German Historical Museum. Thus, with reunification in 1990, the German Historical Museum became an all-German museum of history.

Currently, a new permanent exhibition is being built, which will show German history in its international relations and set new accents. For this reason, the former presentation in the Zeughaus, "German History from the Middle Ages to the Fall of the Wall," will no longer be on view as of the end of June 2021. Due to the renovation measures, the Zeughaus courtyard and the Zeughaus are also not accessible. In the directly adjacent exhibition hall, the Pei-Bau, a diverse exhibition program is dedicated to formative events, developments and people in German history in a European context.

The collections of the German Historical Museum today comprise around one million objects. The German Historical Museum makes a large part of the exhibits available to researchers and interested members of the public online in its database.

The German Historical Museum also includes a public reference library with an extensive department for manuscripts as well as old and valuable prints.

Independently of a visit to the museum, the DHM blog with digital formats offers the opportunity to learn more about the exhibitions and thematic focuses, to discover new things, to inform oneself and to gain an exciting insight into the museum's work.

Lebendiges Museum Online (LeMO) is an online portal on German history in cooperation with the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn and the Federal Archives. It invites users to discover, research, and learn about scientifically based information as well as a large collection of text and image sources on European history from 1815 to the present.

The Zeughauskino with its collection of historical film material shows thematically and monographically oriented film series from the entire spectrum of German and international film history. These include programs that tie in with the themes of the respective temporary exhibitions. In addition, it is the venue for numerous festivals and film days.
