The Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg is Germany's largest private theater. It was founded in 1951 by Friedrich Schütter and Wolfgang Borchert as "Das Junge Theater" and renamed "Ernst Deutsch Theater" in 1973, on the fourth anniversary of the death of actor Ernst Deutsch.

Since its foundation, the Ernst Deutsch Theater has been a forum for social debate, a stage for up-and-coming artists, who are supported here, and a theater with a wide-ranging repertoire. Isabella Vértes-Schütter has been the theater's artistic director since 1995, opening up the theater and continuously developing its diverse program. In 2003, the youth division plattform was founded and in 2008 an additional venue for the youth division was opened: the plattform stage. There is also a studio stage for literary and musical programs in the foyer, which was redesigned in 2015.

In recent years, the Ernst Deutsch Theater has been awarded the Children's and Youth Culture Prize, the National Sponsorship Prize 'Theater bewegt', the Senator Neumann Prize, the Pegasus Prize and the Rolf Mares Prize several times, as well as the 'Pioneer of Inclusion' award.
