Galerie Obrist was founded in 2000 by art historian Torsten Obrist and, as an innovative exhibition space, is now one of the leading contemporary art galleries in the Ruhr region.

Located close to the Folkwang Museum in Essen and directly opposite the store where Rudolf Zwirner founded his first gallery in 1959, the gallery presents young and contemporary artistic positions on an international level. The spectrum ranges from the classical media of painting and sculpture to photography, video and installation, from positions already established on the art market to young "emerging artists." The focus of the gallery's work is on direct and long-term collaboration with the artists, in continuous group and solo exhibitions, in catalog and book publications and at national and international art fairs. The gallery is a regular participant in art fairs in Germany, Canada, Russia, Switzerland and the USA, and was a member of the Federal Association of German Galleries for 20 years.
