The Gärtnerei Grünfrau is a special place that combines food production and social participation.
The Gärtnerei Grünfrau is still a tender plant, but in the future it will be a place of encounter and opportunity for many people.
In Dortmund-Schüren, tasty vegetables are grown in over 100 raised beds on an area of approx. 4500m²: lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and much more are thriving here. And this despite the fact that we are in the middle of an industrial park, on rocky ground and next to the B 236. Grünfrau shows that food production also works in the city and that it is possible to supply fresh vegetables locally.
What's special about the project is that it gives people a chance who don't have it easy on the primary labor market. For example, 15 participants in an employment promotion measure have built up the market gardening business together with two gardeners. They identify with the project and feel responsible for its success. Under supervision, they build raised beds, tend the plants, harvest and maintain the area.
Growing food in particular is a meaningful activity. Working with their hands and in contact with the earth and nature is good for them and strengthens them. In the day-to-day work of the nursery, the women experience self-efficacy and also acquire gardening know-how.
