Granny Mac's Irish Pub

Granny Mac, Mary Angelus Furey, was born on May 31, 1925. Known as Mai, she grew up in Cork, Ireland.

Mai first saw the man who was to become the love of her life at a dance and said at the time that he would marry this woman! Her husband, Tomás MacCurtain, quickly put his words into action and married the black-haired beauty on October 24, 1950. He adored his wife until his death in 1994.

Tomás MacCurtain was the only son of Tomás MacCurtain Senior, the first republican Lord Mayor of Cork, who was murdered by the R.I.C. in his home on the morning of his 36th birthday. Mai's husband followed in his father's footsteps and played an active role in the Irish struggle for freedom for over three decades.

The name "Granny Mac's Irish Pub" was chosen as a tribute to a woman of immeasurable strength and character. She loves interesting conversation, a good "craic" and the occasional sip of whiskey, known in Cork as the "foxy doctor".

My team and I have been lucky enough to spend many hours in Mai's company and enjoy her hospitality. I am very proud to call this special woman my grandmother.
