In the location's words:

Our history

The sight of today's idyllic Hexenhäusle, the small half-timbered building of the gatekeeper's cottage at the Vestnertor dating from the 16th/17th century, almost makes the observer forget the enormous efforts required in the 16th century to reinforce the castle fortifications on the north and west sides. Under the direction of the Maltese fortress builder Antoni Fazuni, three enormous pentagonal fortifications were built between 1538 and 1545. The Vestner Gate, the outer entrance to the castle, where not only the vaulted, arched buttress has been preserved, but also the curved wooden bridge, is a particularly good example of the state of the fortress at that time. Here you can also see the mighty castle bastion to the right, past the Vestnertor bastion rising steeply from the moat to the left (to the walls where Knight Eppelein von Gailingen made his legendary leap across the moat), to the Fünfeckturm tower, to the Kaiserstallung and to Luginsland. In the 1960s, a quirky, elderly lady lived in the Hexenhäusle, who was mistaken for a witch by young children. It was only later that the small house on the Vestnertor bridge was converted into the "Hexenhäusle" restaurant. We look forward to welcoming you to this historic place.
