In 2017, the city of Reutlingen accepted the donation of extensive groups of works from the holdings of the Foundation for Concrete Art (founded in 1987) and the top-class private collection of Manfred Wandel - in whose interaction Florian Illies once recognized the "silent world market leader in the field of concrete art". The Schenker's condition was that, based on this valuable collection, a new independent exhibition business should be established in the Wandel halls (a centrally located former metal cloth and engineering factory) on an area of around 900 square meters. To this end, the city of Reutlingen founded an independent non-profit commercial enterprise (BgA), whose statutes emphasize in particular the mediation of constructive, concrete and conceptual art forms. It bears the name Kunstmuseum Reutlingen | konkret and is organizationally affiliated to the municipal Reutlingen Art Museum.

Since its foundation, the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen | konkret has distinguished itself under the direction of Dr. Holger Kube Ventura through collection exhibitions such as Arbeiten aus System ( 2018), Malereikonkrethochdrei (2019) and Gläserne Härten. Concrete, Generative and Sonic Visionary Art (2020), which present thematically focused cross-sections. On the other hand, the programme is characterized by solo exhibitions by internationally renowned artists such as the Spaniard Ignacio Uriarte (2019) or the Belgian Peter Buggenhout (2021) or the Italian Gianni Caravaggio (2021), as well as group exhibitions with a selective connection to the collection such as In Place - Photography of the Present (2019-20) or Vom Verrinnen. Concepts of Time in Contemporary Art (2022). They each propose different, contemporary reinterpretations of the term "concrete art". In this way, the exhibition explores how the lines of development laid out in the donated collection find their continuation in contemporary art.
