In 1927, Gustav Niehaus opened his mineral water factory and carbonic acid shop in Oldenburg. The Oldenburg lemonade "Krystalla" was produced here from 1954 until the 1960s. The Niehaus family home was also located in Steinweg, with the factory and its delivery entrance at the rear facing Kleine Straße.
By a stroke of luck, the Theater Laboratorium's supporting association was able to convert the historic building into a second performance and rehearsal venue. Since its opening on November 25, 2017, the Limonadenfabrik has hosted theater performances, concerts, readings, workshops and rehearsals for new productions.
This second venue is primarily aimed at a younger audience and, under the direction of Pavel Möller-Lück and Markus Wulf, several young actors from our theater ensemble have already found their stage in the Limonadenfabrik.
After the play "Und auch so Bitterkalt" for young people was created in 2018, two children's plays followed, "Frau Meier die Amsel" and "Der beste Nachmittag der Welt". In 2019, we expanded our repertoire with another children's play, "Das platte Kaninchen", and an evening play for teenagers and young adults, "Die kleine Meerjungfrau".
In addition to our own productions, the Limonadenfabrik also regularly hosts guest performances. Regular guests include the "Theater Anna Rampe", the "Theater Zitadelle" and the "Theater Handgemenge" from Berlin, as well as the "Ensemble Materialtheater" from Stuttgart and solo puppeteers such as Pierre Schäfer, Veronika Thieme and Leonie Euler. We also collaborate with local artists such as the Oldenburg performance collective "Das feministische Paradies" and the Oldenburg Unitheater "Unikum" for improvisational theater. We also offer dance evenings and workshops, such as "Lindy Hop" with Sonja Wessels, accompanied live by the Oldenburg quartet "Asphalt Swing Union".
In the long term, the program is to be supplemented by a series of readings and concerts, which will also give young artists the opportunity to present their work. The rooms of the lemonade factory should offer space for discourse and diversity, encourage encounters and exchange and always be a place that can be reinvented and redesigned through new impulses.
