Augsburg's first municipal museum was built in 1855 and named after the Bavarian King Maximilian II. The headquarters of the Augsburg Art Collections and Museums offers a unique wealth of outstanding works of goldsmith's art, late Renaissance bronze art, scientific instruments, clocks and automata, historical models, objects from the city's history and decorative arts. They all date back to the time of the imperial city, when Augsburg was the art metropolis of Germany. The museum was awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize in 2007.
