Museum am Dom

The Museum am Dom Trier is an institution of the Diocese of Trier (Statute of June 1, 2010). It has the task of collecting, preserving, researching and communicating to the public evidence of the history of art, culture and piety of the Diocese of Trier and the former Archdiocese of Trier, as well as maintaining a dialog with contemporary art. Since 2015, the Museum am Dom has also been responsible for the scientific care of the cathedral treasury of the High Cathedral Church of Trier.

By juxtaposing works of ancient and contemporary art, the museum aims to invite the viewer into a dialog and stimulate reflection. It is a place of encounter and debate with contemporary art and its view of the reality of the world and mankind.

The museum has also been entrusted with the archaeological research of the late antique predecessor buildings of the oldest German episcopal church, Trier Cathedral. This has resulted in a collection of archaeological finds that illustrate the origins of Christianity in Trier in a unique way. The museum looks after the corresponding archaeological excavation sites relating to early Christianity in Trier.

The museum thus documents the continuity of the Trier church from the 4th century to the present day in a unique way.
