It was first held in 1993 as part of the Esslingen Summer of Culture and has since developed into an event with cult status that is known far beyond the city limits. The magnificent venue, the inner courtyard of Esslingen Castle above the rooftops of medieval Esslingen and close to the city center, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, atmospheric and traditional open-air locations in the entire region. Up to 3,000 guests per evening can enjoy Esslingen's open-air cinema - sitting on comfortable high-backed chairs or lying on the lawn. This year, the open-air cinema will take place from July 31 to August 9, 2025.

Lovers of spectacular (Hollywood) overwhelming cinema, romantics and comedy fans will get their money's worth, as will those who prefer the quieter tones or more subtle wit of (European) arthouse cinema. This mix is seasoned with current short films. Live bands from the region set the mood for the film program every evening. A good service for visitors with a varied gastronomic offer, a cocktail at the Cinebar of the Freiraum support association, a daily changing film quiz, free hands-on activities for children and young people on designated days, smooth operation at several admission points, an emergency medical service and supervised toilets. And a special feature of Kino auf der Burg: all jobs on site (including setting up and dismantling this event) are carried out on a voluntary basis with a lot of fun and commitment by members of the association. The cinema at the castle usually takes place from the last Thursday in July to the first Saturday in August.
