A targeted acquisition policy in the six decades since the museum was refounded in 1945 has constituted the departments of classical modernism and contemporary art in the Osthaus Museum Hagen, which structurally and conceptually refer to the Folkwang collection of Karl Ernst Osthaus on the one hand, but on the other have developed an independent profile with their exquisite individual pieces, which has made this collection known beyond Hagen.

The Osthaus Museum Hagen presents its collection in the former Folkwang building designed by the Belgian Art Nouveau architect Henry van de Velde on Museumsplatz in the center of Hagen. Since the extensive reconstruction of the interior, the original concept of the museum building initiated by Karl Ernst Osthaus around 1900 has become comprehensible, conveying the impression of an organically conceived Gesamtkunstwerk.
