In the location's words:

Experience the starry sky in all its splendor, as it can only be seen in a few remote places on earth. Immerse yourself in the universe in the planetarium with state-of-the-art technology.

"Can you see the real stars in the planetarium?" we are often asked. No, the planetarium technology simulates the starry sky and the cosmos in a true-to-life projection on the planetarium dome - regardless of the weather, but only during show times. A planetarium is therefore not a museum where you can visit an exhibition at any time, nor an observatory where you can watch the stars with a telescope at night in good weather.

Come with us on a journey through space and time in a way that humans cannot (yet) do in reality. The list of destinations is long: planets and their moons, distant stars, star clusters and gas nebulae, a vantage point with a fantastic view of our Milky Way, distant galaxies and galaxy clusters. What happened in the Big Bang? What is the fate of our sun? we can even take you billions of years into the future or past.

Questions about the Freiburg Planetarium

1. how did the Freiburg Planetarium come into being?

Imagine: Freiburg's first starry sky was handmade! In the 1960s, mechanical engineering teacher Richard Fehrenbach and his colleagues put together their own planetarium projector in his spare time - with gears, lenses, etc. In 1975, the time had come: artificial stars flickered on the roof of the Fehrenbach School for the first time - the first post-war planetarium in Baden-Württemberg!

Almost 30 years and 10,000 shows later, the venerable DIY projector was sent into retirement. Since 2002, the Freiburg Planetarium has been shining in new splendor right next to the main train station - with a 13-meter dome, high-tech projector & 360° fulldome feeling.

Fun fact: The original Fehrenbach projector can still be seen in the foyer today - a real piece of star history you can touch.

You can find out more about the history of the Freiburg Planetarium or the history of the planetarium in general here.

2. what is the best way to get to the Freiburg Planetarium?

Since its relocation, the planetarium has been located at the north end of Freiburg's main railway station. It is therefore quite centrally located and easy to reach by the following means:

🚶‍♀️ On foot
You only need a few steps from the main station: The entrance is slightly set back on Bismarckallee - barrier-free access from platform 1, from the station building or the footpath/cycle path at the railroad underpass.

🚉 By public transport

  • Train: with regional and long-distance trains simply to Freiburg main station

  • Light rail: lines 1, 2, 3 or 4 to the "Hauptbahnhof" stop, line 5 to "Fahnenbergplatz"

  • Bus: Lines 11 & 14 to "Hauptbahnhof", plus all bus lines to the central bus station (ZOB): This is also located directly at the main station.

🚗 By car
Via Bismarckallee directly to the underground parking garage under the planetarium building (chargeable). Alternatively, there are parking spaces (also for a fee) in Stefan-Meier-Straße - also just a few meters away.

You can find more information and a map with directionshere .

3. is the Freiburg Planetarium barrier-free?

Are you traveling with a wheelchair? No problem - the Freiburg Planetarium is completely barrier-free. It is located on the 3rd floor of the building at Bismarckallee 7g. An elevator takes you up comfortably: Either directly from the first floor or from the 1st floor of the underground parking garage below the building. Access to the garage is via Bismarckallee.

Inside, everything is at ground level and barrier-free, including, of course, a wheelchair-accessible toilet. There are five wheelchair spaces for the screenings - we recommend that you register before your visit so that you can secure one of them.

It's best to arrive around 30 minutes before the performance starts. This gives you enough time to arrive relaxed and take your seat together with the team - for an optimal stargazing experience without the hustle and bustle.

In addition to barrier-free access, hearing aids are also available. Assistance dogs are permitted and free of charge.

4. are the events at the Freiburg Planetarium also suitable for children?

Whether you are five years old or fifty: at the Freiburg Planetarium, there is a view of space that suits you. The programs are tailored to different age groups - from the first amazement at the stars to a deep dive into the universe.

There are special children's programs for children aged 5, 6 or 7 - imaginative, exciting and tailored to the respective age. The recommended minimum age is stated for each event - please pay attention! Unfortunately, children under the age of 5 cannot be admitted .

Family programs are ideal for kids aged 8 and over - they offer exciting content that also inspires teens and adults. The perfect introduction? "Journey through the Night" or "Planets - Expedition into the Solar System"!

Evening programs are made for adults - but interested young people aged 12 and over will also get their money's worth here. Tip: Take a look at the program description beforehand so that you know what to expect.

Specials at the planetarium: from concerts and readings to puppet theater. The latter is suitable for children aged 6 and over, the rest is aimed more at adults with a taste for culture among the stars.

5 How does a show at the Freiburg Planetarium work?

Important: There is no admission after the start! Once the stars have started, the door remains closed. So better be there a few minutes earlier.
