The traditional independent theater south of Bochum's city center looks back on over 30 years of history: the PRINZ REGENT THEATER was founded in 1991 as an association of independent artists in Bochum. The theater's impressive stage space, in which mainly spoken theater from all eras is performed, is located inside a former colliery building and offers space for up to 100 spectators. The "PRT" is supported by the Prinz Regent Theaterverein e.V. The PRT receives long-term funding from the city of Bochum, the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Freundeskreis des PRINZ REGENT THEATER e.V. The Sparkasse Bochum and Stadtwerke Bochum are also regular and long-standing supporters.
Anne Rockenfeller and Hans Dreher have formed the management team since June 2018. The PRT does not have its own ensemble; instead, it relies on freelance actors, directors and set designers who work throughout the German-speaking world and beyond. Friendships with many regional and nationally active institutions and ensembles shape the artistic program, which includes guest performances and live music in addition to in-house and co-productions. For many years, the PRINZ REGENT THEATER has been the venue for the international puppet and object theater festival FIDENA and a venue for the FRITZ WORTELMANN PRIZE. There is an ongoing collaboration with the directing course at the Folkwang University of the Arts to promote young talent.
