What started in 2012 as a one-off art, culture and music festival took on clear forms and deep structures in 2013 through continued drive and the accompanying founding of the non-profit art and culture association "tonbande e.V.". The tonbande is a collective of about a dozen artists and cultural activists as well as many hands full of active supporters and helpers. The drive for the cultural enthusiasm was and is the desire to bundle the multi-layered creative and human potential of the north of Dortmund and the Ruhr area and to give it concrete places and realities.

Since July 2013, the tonbande has its own home with the REKORDER in the middle of a vibrant area of the north of Dortmund in the Gneisenaustraße 55. The Rekorder, that is an art and culture place that opens its doors about twice a week to allow a platform for creativity and collectivity. Thus, the Rekorder mainly hosts concerts, but also parties and readings, discussions and theme evenings around social issues. The program is interdisciplinary and flexible.

The Rekorder sees itself as an open space and actively cooperates with various friends, institutions and like-minded people. With the Rekorder, tonbande wants to offer an independent platform for the Dortmund cultural scene in the long term and do justice to its role in the harbor district, which is characterized by structural upheaval.

Since April 2017, tonbande has expanded its premises to include another venue. With the Rekorder II, a space is found that offers room for all the things that are not quite possible in the Rekorder.

The REKORDER II is a flexible production space for developing, creating and presenting creative work. Here, artists*, creatives and cultural activists can work on projects of various kinds and use the space in their sense - be it as a temporary studio, an exhibition space, a collaborative creative lab, a production space for (audio) recordings, or or or. The space offers a wide variety of possibilities for animation. Workshops and exhibitions are also possible. Temporary uses can range from one-day seminars to longer lasting art production. Furthermore, there is the possibility to combine what has been created with an event in the Rekorder, which is located just one street away. With Rekorder II, tonbande wants to give space to art and respond to the contemporary needs of artists, creatives and cultural activists.
