Schauspielhaus Bochum has been one of the leading venues for contemporary theater and performing arts in the German-speaking theater scene for more than a hundred years. Johan Simons has been artistic director since 2018. He and the Schauspielhaus Bochum team see this venue as a city theater for the 21st century, where artists from different nations, cultures and disciplines find a creative home. The heart of the theater is the permanent acting ensemble, which brings cultural influences from different nations in Europe and around the world.

Every season, Schauspielhaus Bochum produces new performances of drama, dance and interdisciplinary art, which are also performed in other theaters in Germany and Europe as well as at international festivals. In 2022, it was named Theater of the Year in the Germany, Austria and Switzerland region for its outstanding program.

The theater also includes the Junges Schauspielhaus, which has been directed by Cathrin Rose since 2018 and whose program is shaped by new narrative forms for a modern and diverse urban society.

Schauspielhaus Bochum has four venues: the Schauspielhaus (up to 800 seats), the Kammerspiele (400 seats), the Oval Office (100 seats) and, two kilometers away, the Theaterrevier, the Young Playhouse's venue for children's and youth theater.
